Letters: Badly needed: Male mentors
Philadelphia Daily News
IF YOU'RE a successful adult male, you can probably think back and recall many older men who helped mold you into who you are today.
Your father. Big brother. Uncles. The electrician down the block. We all stood on the shoulders of giants to get a better look at our future. Today, young African-American boys all across the city are looking for those giants with shoulders.

Program provides tutors, mentors for students
ABERDEEN — The school district and a local church are partnering for a mentoring program for students that will provide tutoring as well as guidance from community volunteers.
"This program began as a partnership between the district and the Community Bible Fellowship Church," said Wayne Spells, principal of the Cambridge Park Elementary School and director of special programs for the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District. "This program is meant to help students during a time period when they are more likely to engage in questionable activity, once outside of school."

Parish gets mentoring program for at-risk youth
“Once we had saturated those areas, we wanted to move into the community over here (in the parish),” Coalition Director Chuck Mayfield said.
Those at the meeting included members of the coalition and representatives of the Concordia Parish School District.
The goal of the mentoring program is to have an adult who can act as a support and a barrier from bad influences for children who have an incarcerated parent, said Alethia Lawrence, who will head up the Concordia Parish wing of the program.
