Hi Becky. Thanks so much for this story. I definitely agree that Craigslist needs to learn a thing or two about social responsibility, and signing the petition is a fantastic way of making that clear to them.
One suggestion - Many of us would like to move away from the label "child prostitute". Before these kids were pimped they were runaways. The term "prostitute" in our society often gives the impression of a choice, but these are children who have been exploited at the hands of others.
When we use terms such as prostituted children, or sexually exploited children, we put the blame on the exploiter instead of on the child. It may seem unimportant or petty, but I think the way we speak is directly linked to the way we think and perceive people. As you've pointed out, these children are VICTIMS. Let's speak about them in such a way that makes that clear to everybody.
Again, thanks for sharing your story and helping us all better understand this issue. :)
Hi Janet -
I understand your point. In fact, I am Director of an anti-trafficking organization and have been working on this issue for about 5 years. My point was not that these people are not in slavery - my point has more to do with the way we "label" people. By using terminology such as prostituted, exploited or enslaved we put the label or blame on the people who exploited the victim, as opposed to the victim themselves. After all, there is hope for a victim to come out of slavery. It is not what they "are". I do appreciate your posts. Thanks for keeping us informed.
Tania
Thank you for sharing this story. In the future, however, please use different terminology. These children are not sex slaves. They are children who have been exploited by others. Terms such as prostituted children, or sexually exploited children put the blame on the exploiter. The anti-trafficking movement is working hard to help those combating trafficking to think twice about the terminology used so we can begin shifting the mindset of the general public. :) Thanks!
