Our son Christopher used to get upset when substitute school bus drivers would take a different route, so being left behind was not as big of a concern. We also made sure he was seated directly behind the bus driver, which was written into his Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Now that Christopher is beginning his transition from school to the community, we are starting to plan for thsese issues. We will start by taking the bus with him, then the job coach riding with him, and then (gradually) he would take the bus by himself. We will also make sure each of the drivers know Christopher and a little bit about him. We have found that breaking activities down into smaller, more manageable steps has worked well for us.
