The tarsands are being developed in an unethical way. None of us would want them in our backyard, poisoning our air, water, food and causing cancers in our loved ones. It's time to hold the oil companies and the govts of Canada and the USA accountable. Stop the oil addiction. Invest in clean energy.
As Dan pointed to above, reducing stormwater runoff is one of the big benefits of a permeable driveway. Runoff is the #1 source of water pollution in most urban areas. We divert about 10,000 gallons annually (vs. when we had an interlock driveway). http://www.frankejames.com/debate/?p=98
Permeability is key. Grass is only one option.
Thanks Jess! I totally agree. Our cities would be so much cooler (in every way), and reduce water pollution and feed the trees and plants, if we had more permeable (green) surfaces.
We need to unpave our paradise. FYI, see my essay on building the green driveway. http://www.frankejames.com/debate/?p=98
Thanks for this opportunity to be on Change.org!
Sarah,
Thanks for the insights on Stephen Schneider's role as a climate champion. You've made me curious to find out more about him and his work. I think Schneider nailed it when he said that our lack of real progress on the climate front is due to “ignorance, greed, denial, tribalism, and short-term thinking.” I'm going to read his book 'Science as a Contact Sport', and see if I can use any of his thinking to change my own habits...
