It becoming apparent that environmental factors are responsible for a large extent of the increases in autism, a recent study of California children showed that the increased rate of autism seen in that state can not be explained by population dynamics, economics or genetic factors, leaving environmental factors as the most likely cause. Because there is a lot of evidence that dietary interventions can successfully treat autism it seems that environmental exposure, most likely through food, is the main cause of the increased rate of autism.
I point this out for two reasons: Firstly to parents of autistic children, don't give up, look into improving the quality of foods your children eat, it is not easy but has the potential of helping greatly. And secondly, we need to realize that what we do has broad and far reaching effects. The way we eat is linked to the way we act as consumers and is directly affects and is affected by the industries that are polluting our world and children.
We need to make choices in every aspect of our lives with our eyes wide open to all the potential effects our choices make. As far as autism, we don't know enough to say exactly what is going on but that should not stop us from making choices that are healthy for our environment as well as our families. I believe that, eventually, they are the same choice and only our incessant desire to cut corners and shirk our responsibilities to each other and the earth confuses us in the short term. We need to remember that all children have special needs, most of all a healthy environment to grow in. When we rely on social agencies to correct problems we have alredy missed the opportunity to nuture helathy children by protecting their envirnment.
By the way, omega 3 oils are only a small part of what a body needs to function properly. In general, environmental stress causes several systems to switch into an inflammatory state that can, when this state becomes chronic, disturb the normal development of all systems, especially sensitive systems like nervous, endocirne and metabolic systems. Spectrum disorders are another tip of an ice burg we are all beginning to feel moving into our lives. Other problems include metabolic syndrome and diabetes, precocious puberty, infertility, heart disease and cancer.
