Hi Idriss, Thank you for your comment. That is a very good point (and from an infectious disease doctor too!). I saw that you sent me a message by facebook, but haven't been able to reply as facebook is blocked here in China. I look forward to responding at the next oportunity.
Hi Mark, This is an excellent discussion topic and a struggle that we at One Earth Designs face frequently. I was very heartened by your conclusion. Good luck on Friday!
Ann, I was wondering if those at the UN with whom you spoke provided any further details on how they, '"ignite" a sense of disgust'. This sounds like quite a curious approach...
Excellent comments about the necessity of global exchange replacing a one way service relationship. I question, however, just how “shielded" the "poor" really are from the “danger of seeing how bad they have it”.
(1) Now, most people around the world have at least some access to images from the outside which bring with them as much, if not more, of the very feeling of 'inferiority' that you alluded to in your post.
(2) The real issue is not that people need to be shielded from the high-tech and immaculately 'clean' worlds that many of us come from, but that the less visible portions of our lives (the nursing homes, the daycares, the laxatives used to lose weight...) need to also be told honestly so that others know what they are saying when they speak of wanting to 'live like Americans'.
(3) I also want to distinguish between people who lack money and people who feel poor. These are too very different states, for many can lack money and still be rich.
Thanks Sloan. We absolutely agree! We've heard many good things about your work in Bangladesh as well.
