  • Obama Tries to 'Wiretap' the Internet
Antony commented on the article | over 1 year ago

    Points taken, Kyros and Edwin.

The serious issue in Franklin's quote is the "essential" of liberty and the "deserving" of safety. What are "non-essential" liberties, is the Internet being misconstrued as one of them, and what can be done to stop this? And if we are not all deserving of the same safety, what's the point of liberty at all?

As for the Green Party, it is one thing to "care" about civil rights and liberties, and another to be in a position to do something about them. Why have they failed, and what can or should be done about this, either in that party or any other?

Thanks Bev, I appreciate your outlook! I would say though that the system of U.S. military, followed by NATO military, followed by UN peacekeepers (or any variations thereof) is far from the best and certainly not the only way to bring about change.

Roger, I think this unprecedented window of opportunity, wherever it may lead, is at least worth exploring in parallel with the status quo as is being done, if not replacing it altogether, for the reasons I have given. As you seem to think strongly otherwise, I am interested in hearing your reasons and any plausible, constructive alternative you see if you care to share them in a more rational and respectful way.

  • How to Vote for Peace this November

Lee, why do you turn an opportunity to collaborate to meet common goals into an antagonistic, in-fighting struggle that has plagued and limited the effectiveness pro-peace/anti-war efforts in the U.S. and globally?

Doug, I'm guessing you're Canadian? If so, do you see any difference in positions and/or debates taking place in Canada compared to the U.S. regarding the Israeli-Palestinian situation? Or any changes since Harper's Conservative government has come to power?

Joe, does the planetary annihilation potential of the thousands of nukes the US still has, as well as those of Israel, bother you at all? Two wrongs don't make a right, but neither does one wrong.

Great point Sarah. Prohibiting arms sales based on such government's own criteria, as is done with terrorism support etc., could be very effective. Any thoughts on how this could be done?

  • Debunking the Myth of Al Qaeda in Afghanistan
Antony commented on the article | over 1 year ago

Jay, I seriously suggest you re-read the article you link to (notably dated November 2001) because it makes the point being made here even clearer. The reporters are discussing the Taliban (which as you probably know the U.S. brought to power to counter the Soviet occupation in the 1980s), yet the White House official quoted is talking about Al Qaeda as if they were the threat in Afghanistan, no difference between them. It's exactly these links, this consequential and knowingly deceptive slippage, which are being debunked here.
