Prejudice on the basis of disability (ableism) is not a legitimate form of speech, much like racism and sexism.
I am Autistic, and this is abuse and wrong. I have testified against the JRC at two hearings held last summer in Massachusetts, and sitting there listening to them defend their use of torture was sickening.
I am Autistic and an advocate for other Autistic people. Blade does NOT belong in the adult prison system. If he has been legally convicted of a crime, then he should be receiving a sentence that fits both the crime AND the offender. Blade is Autistic, and that means he has a disability that by law, Indiana is required to accommodate and serve. Because he is in the custody of the Indiana government, they have not merely a moral but a legal obligation to protect him. That is what custody means; it is why the same word is used to refer to who is responsible for children in a divorce. What is happening to him now is nothing less than abuse and torture, and that is unconscionable, particularly as Blade belongs to a segment of the population that is especially vulnerable to abuse.
Abuse and torture in the name of treatment are the worst types of abuse and torture. There is no excuse that can justify what these people did to Andre.
