I am a 20-something originally from Texas, but without a permanent home at the moment. After graduating from Yale University in 2006, I headed to DC, searching for a job that would allow me to be of service to disadvantaged populations. After the usual 9-5 in Washington, DC working for a government contractor in health communication, I packed my bags and volunteered in Mozambique, assisting in a capacity building program for Mozambican NGOs working in HIV/AIDS. I lived in Argentina as a volunteer with a community health center that treats HIV patients for six months. I currently work as an AmeriCorps member for a nonprofit that helps refugee youth succeed in education
I am passionate about public health, especially in developing countries which is the perfect outlet to feed my love of travel and social change. My blog features observations about social change through the prism of public health.

Vanessa commented on the article |Do you know if they have found a causal relationship between prenatal care and infant mortality even for the United States? From what I know of infant mortality rates in the United States, our infant mortality rate is ranked in the middle for OECD countries. From anecdotes that I have heard from friends working with low-income women, most prenatal care that community centers provide focus more on education rather than direct medical services.

Vanessa commented on the article |This is a digustingly exploitative campaign led by PETA. They are turning the homeless into walking billboards. There is no reason that PETA staffers could not do wear the coats and carry the cups other than PETA wanted what they thought would be positive PR. This is nothing more than a pretense of providing service to the homeless. This is elitism at its worst; on one hand to accuse people buying fur of exploiting animals while simultataneously exploiting people.

Vanessa commented on the article |I think that future scandals involving fake and/or contaminated drugs are going to revive the debate regarding patents and how much control pharmaceutical companies have over their intellectual property when considering the human impact of drugs and vaccines not being affordable enough for people who need them the most. This may be particularly prominent in the area of HIV treatment.
