The discrimination against gay leaders in the Boy Scouts is something of which I am particularly appalled. I am an Eagle Scout and I believe that there is no reason for anyone's sexuality to be involved in the Boy Scouts. Family life is an important part of Scouting, but the basis for this is the social bonding and support that children need from their parents.
The Boy Scouts needs to let go of their legacy of British Imperialism, racism, colonialism, and eugenically based ideas. Of additional concern is the usual defense based on fears of sexual abuse, a completely unfounded, bigoted, and hateful ideology.
Last time I checked, the Scout Law was that a Scout should be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrify, brave, clean, and reverent.
You'll pardon me if I don't see "straight" in that list.
As an alumnus and staff member of the U of C, I'm saddened that the university cannot stand by its own principles of open communication and debate on the issues of modern life. This is an opportunity to engage some of the foremost thinkers about race relations in the country in a discussion of the ways in which race and politics intersect in daily life, especially through the focusing lens of Trayvon Martin's case.
This is a much needed perspective and discussion and the University of Chicago should be the place where it happens if we wish to continue to tout ourselves as the defenders of free exchange of ideas.
Too often, especially in highly urban areas, but as frequently in smaller towns, we see white people, sometimes police officers, shoot and kill young black men, often on the flimsiest of pretexts. This kind of institutional racial violence has to stop, and the only way to do it is to prosecute those responsible.
