Elizabeth, I think that you have spoken the reality for many in America. One of our friends called my wife last week saying that she just canceled their long distance phone service and doesn't know what else to cut. My wife keeps telling her that her family is not the only family having trouble. Her husband lost his job driving a van that takes sick people to the hospital because one day he was taking a client to a hospital 4 hours away and so they stopped at a restaurant to eat. He offered grace before they ate and the lady was offended and reported him. He was fired.
I like the idea of extending unemployment. I think that they ought to extend it for up to 2 1/2 years as long as the person is in school toward a degree. That would make many openings for teachers that could be filled by experts that are no longer employed.
As far as the national dept is concerned we are never going to be able to pay it off. I would just rather any money that is given be given to the people that need it instead of the corporations who have already taken more then their share.

I am sorry. I was trying to make a link to the poverty and hunger website I am working on at http://www.povertyandhunger.org but it didn't work and I do not know how to edit it.
Can the poor be helped out of poverty in America? Of course.
Will they be? Not until we as Americans demand it.
When will that be? Hopefully before it is too late and our economy has slipped to the point that we all suffer from poverty and hunger.
That being said I do not think that the government should just give to people that can help themselves. Our government should help them help themselves. In 2003 I lost my job as an Electronic technician when the contracts my place of employment had with a cell phone company were lost to a company in Mexico. We were told that they pay $8 a day plus lunch down there. The question I have is were the poor people in Mexico lifted out of poverty with $8 a day plus lunch? (Maybe we do not care about the rest of the world seeing how this is a blog about America, but did the cell phone companies pass the savings on to Americans?) Anyway my point is since my job went to Mexico due to a government policy, the government extended my unemployment to two years so that I could go to school and be retrained. Now I am a Registered Nurse. I career I went into because it was "layoff resistant." (The hospital I work at is mailing out layoff notices Monday.)
Last year there were two stimulus/bailout packages. One for us people and the other for the banks. I am sorry that I do not know how those two compare in a per-person basis but I believe that if the people were given what the banks were given the economy would have been fixed.
I live in Northern Minnesota where it is above 0 degrees today. In this state the electric company can not turn off your electricity during the winter as long as you contact them and make an attempt to pay your bill. The state also has a heating assistance program where they will buy you some fuel oil, electricity, or even wood if you use that to heat with. The funds in this program are having to be spread between more people this year.
My wife and I liked the book you mentioned, Nickle and Dimed: On (not) Getting By in America. I tells it like it is. We also liked Cut Your Grocery Bills in Half by Barbara Salsbury (1982) It helped us prepare for and get through 3 years of unemployment.
I am a nurse at a hospital and our ER is seeing many people that do not see any hope. We need to find ways to give people hope and simplify the process of getting help to people that need it.
I am excited that you have started this poverty in America blog. I was wanting to do something like this with the http://www.povertyandhunger.org site that I started, but I do not have the knowledge or skills to make it this professional looking and informative.
I believe that more and more families are going to fall into poverty in the coming months, and they do not have a clue how to survive without a steady paycheck. I hope that you can give them some ideas on how to survive the shock, guilt, and hopelessness that they feel when they find themselves thrown into poverty due to circumstances beyond their control.
