Sometimes research regarding the causes of autism can seem to be both too scientific and too conjectural at the same time. See http://www.neoteny.org/?p=325 for an example of a unique theory outlining the cause of autism, portions of which have received some support, but is considered too unorthodox by many to embrace. It's an evolutionary explanation.

I'm a web developer specializing in social change programming with personal passion for understanding the evolutionary origins of autism. Something that has struck me this week is the relationship between the theory of mind or mindblindness that Baron-Cohen describes and primary process as described by Freud and Gregory Bateson. Primary process is experiencing the world as one does in dream with only a now, no two places at once, and no negatives, only what things are.
Change.org is an astonishing tool. I'm glad to see it being used to discuss autism. Visit http://www.neoteny.org/?cat=7 for more of my thoughts regarding autism and its connection to these new online social tools.
