They believe they are "keeping people safe," but they grew up in a very segregated area with white supremacist (sexist and homophobic) media and are part of the problem, not the solution.

There are plenty of gay christians. Check out Evangelicals Concerned. Or the more congregation-based Metropolitan Community Church (can vary a lot according to city). There are gay mormons, gay orthodox jews, gay baptists. Thank God for 'em. But, yes, you are learning the hard way here to preach to the oppressors, not the oppressed. Thanks to your openness.
