    Hi, Charlie,

There are plenty of gay christians. Check out Evangelicals Concerned. Or the more congregation-based Metropolitan Community Church (can vary a lot according to city). There are gay mormons, gay orthodox jews, gay baptists. Thank God for 'em. But, yes, you are learning the hard way here to preach to the oppressors, not the oppressed. Thanks to your openness.

  • Why Canyon Ridge Christian Church Defends Its Financial Support of Anti-Gay Ugandan Pastor
Dawn commented on the article | over 1 year ago

As bad as supporting homophobia, Ssempa and Ugandan conservatives have been telling lies about the success of A-B-C in reducing AIDS infection. Actually what has worked is A-B-C-D, "D" is for "death."  When there is no treatment and PLWA (people living with AIDS) die quickly, of course there are less people infected.

However, a field-study conducted in Rakai, a region in southern Uganda, showed that abstinence and fidelity rates had been declining during 1995-2002, but without the expected rise in HIV/AIDS rates, suggesting a greater role for condoms than acknowledged by Museveni. The other central finding of the Rakai study was that, due to Uganda's focus on prevention of the spread of HIV-AIDS, rather than treatment for those who had already contracted the disease, a large part of the decline in prevalence of HIV-AIDS is due to the premature death of those who have contracted it. This lead to the popular play on the ABC campaign, 'A-B-C-D', with the D standing for Death. Because only prevalence is measured, incidence can actually increase while prevalence decreases if those who contract HIV are not treated for the disease, thereby dying younger. Also, studies show an increase in STDs and thus HIV infection--what is the relation to the deemphasis of condoms? We have seen in the U.S. that evengelical young people have more high risk behavior due to their HIV education focusing of abstinence (http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=409&Itemid=177).

Later studies have seriously questioned the veracity of Uganda's miraculous HIV-AIDS claims.

Yes, it is important to delay the age of young people first having sex and promote abstinence. But not at the expense of condom use, STD increase and HIV treatment. This will just INCREASE the HIV infection rate--AIDS death rate--and has according to new studies.

  • Coming Out of the Closet as a Conservative for Gay Rights
Dawn commented on the article | over 1 year ago

Charlie, politics is not about individuals whom we have to evaluate one at a time. Such atomistic thinking will never lead to change. People need the support of a wider community, a political party, to be in office. Despite their personal beliefs, or orientation, their party affiliation is by far the determining factor in their ACTUAL VOTES. If it were otherwise we wouldn't have the continuing flood of conservative politicians and preachers being thrown out of their jobs! Please articulate a statistically meaningful avenue to prediting canidates political action. We don't care about their feelings. Of course it is important that some people, like you and I, do--that is how change occurs. But that change is not in getting gay people to vote Conservative. Change will happen when gay people in conservative locations, faith communities and occupations do the hard work of organizing in our own conservative communities. Please find some like-minded support in an area where you can make a difference IN YOUR OWN CONSERVATIVE COMMUNITY.

  • Coming Out of the Closet as a Conservative for Gay Rights

Just because McCain's wife supports gay rights--what does that have to do with Conservative politicians and parties consistent and overwhelming abuse of gay people and our rights!  Does her support for gay marraige make McCain support any more legislation pro-gay marraige? Of course an incredible amount of Democrats don't give a shit for our rights. But, the PARTY'S PLATFORM does, that means the overwhelming amount of Democrats have to generally vote for gay rights.  And visa versa for Republicans.  Even while so many are closet cases with "wide stances." Jordan, this article does not articulate a way forward for gay people and sounds like you are just trying to land a job with conservatives or can't deal with the people around you hating you.  I live in a very conservative red state and sympathize with that. But the solution is NOT trying to convert oppressed gay people to conservatism, but converting conservative people to see that gay people are just people. It takes therapy, community and patience for the long haul.  But in the end, yes, we can change our conservative community. Best wishes.
