• Is Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Doomed in Los Angeles?
Ethan commented on the article | about 1 year ago

I dig what Jamie's doing, but nevertheless ... the Food Revolution will not be televised!! And the real food revolution is happening right now in school gardens everywhere!!! If you'd like to support the school gardens revolution, here is one fantastic way: Please nominate LA school gardening maestro @Cocoxochitl for a Shorty award in #green!

http://shortyawards.com/Cocoxochitl

While internet contests may be silly, helping others is not. I’m delighted to share with you the opportunity to do the coolest work I’ve ever done: Build gardens for kids. It affords tremendous lessons for both teachers and kids. When you take care of things, like kids and plants alike, they grow. Thank you for your help in our work to teach our children just that.

School gardens, culinary arts programs, urban youth farms and non-profits around the country have teamed up with local and national donors to get support for their work. If we get 1,000 #green Shorty nominations, our donors will be just that for our kids. Angels! Donors! Heroes!

At 500 votes we triggered the first donor pledge goal and received just over $100k in seeds plants, compost and organic produce for 225 schools in New Orleans, New York, Washington DC and Los Angeles. When the Shorty Award deadline was extended to February 11, we invited more stellar projects to engage social media for support as they engage kids in healthy eating, experiential learning, community building, and environmental stewardship.

San Franciscans, your nomination is a vote for Urban Sprouts. Boston, City Sprouts needs you! Chicagoland, the infamous Mrs. Q, a blogging teacher who ate school lunch everyday for a year, is counting on you. Let’s get this girl some kale! IF we get 50 $1000 gift cards from Home Depot, that’s 50 schools across the country with shorter wishlists!

Corporate sponsors, the Shortys are the “Oscars of Twitter” and you can count on me and my “school garden Tweeps” to amplify your generosity. Look at the projects on the left and find the right fit for your garden gloves, greenhouses or organic produce.

The School Garden CoOp is behind this DonorsChoose.org- inspired connectivity between some of the most awesome people on the planet (folks who get kids connected to dirt and their food) and their badly needed supporters. No one said the Shortys and the buzz they created couldn’t be a fundraiser. But look, we made it into a #popupdonorschoose.

• 7 Sustainable Food Campaigns to Watch in 2011
Ethan commented on the article | about 1 year ago

One of the top trends for 2011 is DEFINITELY the rise of ethically-sourced, cooperatively-run sustainable food storefronts and cafés on college campuses. There is s a new national training program and research institute empowering students across the U.S. to create food co-ops on their campuses. It's called the Cooperative Food Empowerment Directive -- www.cofed.org.

Already there is at least 10 of these campus-based sustainable food co-ops around the U.S. and the progressive media is starting to pay attention! http://www.cofed.org/2011/01/02/cofed-gets-major-media-as-the-campus-food-co-op-revolution-starts-going-national/

Please learn more by checking out www.cofed.org & listen to a great radio interview with the co-founder that aired January 2nd on KPFA: http://www.cofed.org/wp-content/uploads/KPFA_01022011_YoniLandau1.wav
