Religious freedom does not include a license to malign non-believers or anyone else - including Chicago's LGBT community, which (after all) promptly rescheduled its 2012 Gay Pride Parade so as not to conflict with a Catholic Mass along its route. Cardinal George's comparison of that community, and of its parade focused on Gay Pride, to the Ku Klux Klan's anti-Catholic organizing efforts of the 1940's was horrifying to all people of decency; his refusal to withdraw the comment defies both morality and common sense. He should be immediately removed from his position of power and influence over the spiritual lives of Chicago's Roman Catholics.
I am proud to add my voice to this international cry for justice on behalf of the refugee populations of Israel. Israel can and must do better to spread justice and compassion, if for no other reason than to remember and rise above the injustices perpetrated upon the Jewish people throughout the world. Shalom to all peoples!
