@Sarah R: I'm not sure what you mean by "too." Did you mean cissexual women? Human women? Because Ida is a straight woman.

Vomiting upon discovering that a woman is trans is a trope with a specific negative history, you can't dismiss it by saying that "characters vomit all the time." This idea is also linked with the so-called "trans panic defense" where in men try to get away with murder because they were allegledly shocked to find out that their romantic partner was trans.

Brian wasn't actually vomiting because she was trans but because he incorrectly perceived her as a man. Thus the vomiting is about HOMOPHOBIA. That is part of the reason there is an LGBT movement -- our oppressions are linked.

Nicole, it's not about being "offended," it's about perpetuating oppression. You are not a trans woman and do not experience the oppression that trans women do. Cissexual women speak from a position of privilege that does not take into account the real, lived experiences of trans women.

No, no one is forcing anyone to watch this show, but trans women are forced to live with the consequences of this show, which perpetuates the idea that trans women are deceivers. You clearly believe that as well -- it is not a "lifestyle" and your trans friend is not "living as" a woman she IS a woman.

Perpetuating the oppression of trans women perpetuates the oppression of cis women as well. I hope you will continue to educate yourself. Maybe read Whipping Girl by Julia Serano.

If you watch Family Guy on Hulu, the Fox website, or a similar ad-based commercial site you will in effect be paying Seth MacFarlane for his misogynistic anti-trans episode via advertising.

"Brian's response, it seems, clearly perpetuates the false idea that intimacy with transgender people is disgusting."

The show perpetuated the idea that sleeping with trans WOMEN is disgusting. That is a very specific form of oppression -- trans misogyny. The title to this article ignore that fact. There is no question that this episode was transphobic. Allies have to recognize that transphobia affects trans women in unique ways. The vomiting trope and the idea that trans women are decievers are two biggies.

Quagmire (the son) is a serial rapist. Having him accept the "sex offender" transgender character is making a statement alright, and it's not a positive one.

I don't think it's accurate to say that sex reassignment surgery was an "important issue" covered by the show. Denial of access to health care is a serious issue facing trans people. It's not like you can walk into a Veteran's Administration hospital and get SRS.

This is the type of show that people can point to it and say, "oh, but I'm not like that, that's just a joke." But it's not a fucking joke, that shit really happens to real people on a daily basis, and all the people who just sit around and claim they're not like that are the same people who stare at trans women in public, don't consider them to be potential romantic partners, exclude them public bathrooms, and fire and refuse to hire them.

It is this show that made me want to vomit, not sleeping with my transsexual girlfriend.
