I'm a police officer from Victoria, British Columbia and a distance education student at Athabasca University. While off-duty, I volunteer as a public speaker with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. LEAP is an international group of 16,000 cops, judges, prosecutors and corrections officers who want to lessen the incidence of death, disease, crime, and addiction by gradually legalizing and regulating drugs.
LEAP doesn't support or encourage drug abuse by anyone, but we believe a system of regulation would be more ethical and less harmful than prohibition.
I'm not really a political person, although I enjoy participating in public debate. Any views I express here on change.org are my own and do not represent my department or any organization.

David commented on the petition |I am a police officer in Canada. When I'm on duty, I enforce all laws including those against drug possession and trafficking. However, when I'm off-duty, I volunteer my time as a public speaker to educate people about the failure of drug prohibition.
From time to time, I have experienced problems at work because of my personal views regarding the terrible War on Drugs. Fortunately, I've been able to keep my job, largely because the Charter of Rights and Freedoms provides Canadian with strong free speech protection.
I feel awful for Agent Bryan Gonzalez. No one should lose their job simply because they expressed a reasonable opinion to a colleague.
