David's show is one of the few intriguing shows around. We need to support such shows.

Sad, that it takes so long to stop something which is so destructive to our environment when in reality, the change could happen overnight. Thanks Marah.
P.S. Coincidentally, I just wrote a blog about plastic bags. If you'd like, feel free to check it out: http://marcuzzimusic.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/biodegradability/

  • Local vs. Organic: Which Is More Sustainable?
Nathan Michael commented on the article | almost 2 years ago

I wasn't arguing that Organic is less valuable than conventional.  I agree that organic IS more valuable BUT not when it comes in the form of a cookie box @ walmart or from a large farm (like EarthBound) in California.  That is a joke.  You, and your farm are not a joke, so it's safe to de-stream.

Remember, let us not get caught up on the WORD organic.  It's not about the word, it's about the love and care you put into your stuff.  An educated, in-tune customer, someone who cares about what they eat, knows a true "organic" farmer when they see one, whether you have "organic" written over everything or not.

I kind of 'jumped the gun' on this one so I would just like to add/point out that (in this particular case) we shouldn't throw out the baby with the bath water.  Whole Foods does a lot more than most grocery stores to support local agriculture, non-GMO labelling and organic distribution.  In fact, I just downloaded their "Country of Origin" document and a lot of their stuff comes from the USA. So, yes, WF's are trying BUT (to another point) we have to also understand that they are a business trying to survive.  If they would only sell local, organic, in season foods, they would surely be out of business. Why? Because the truth is (sadly), people want frozen foods - BUT they don't want it from China. Well guess what? We don't have enough small bio-diverse Farmers!! Why? Two reasons: 1) Major agriculture companies like Monsanto 2) Lazy people like us who don't want to put a shovel in the ground because we can just buy a bag of lettuce instead.  So really, when we break it down, not only is it a vicious circle but we only have OURSELVES to blame, not Whole Foods.

With all do respect, your argument(s) offers no comfort.  I live/work on an (almost) bio-dynamic farm, but it's not certified.  Why?  Because these certifications, guidelines, standards etc. which you mention are a bloody joke.  And any farmers who has looked into the process or has gone through the process would likely agree to some degree.

Furthermore, these third parties which you mention are also a joke. You can watch the video posted above for a fine example of such.

P.S.  I just thought I would share this: WHOLE FOODS, North America's largest retailer of "Organic" gets much of their "organic" frozen food from... get ready for it... CHINA!  Organic food from China!  Even their "California Blend" vegetables come from China.  What a laugh!

So there is a perfect example: Organic-my-ass frozen food from China or locally grown non-organic frozen food.  I bet you can guess which I would buy.

As Albert Einstein put it, "The important thing is not to stop questioning", or in this case 'asking'.  So, I agree with you Nicole.

There is no straight answer when choosing between organic vs. local.  Our choice should be made dependent upon the answers we get as well as the specific product.  Also, we should all remember that the more WE ask, the more our grocery stores will ask (of their suppliers), and know... which is a good direction.

Perhaps  one day we'll never have to asked cause EVERYTHING will be out of someone's back yard, bio-dynamically grown with love.

Down with Monsanto and to whom ever thinks Monsanto is doing good.

    Aloha!
