  • Holiday Gift Guide: Where to Find Fair Trade Gifts
Melissa commented on the article | about 2 years ago

It may seem small, but I decided to purchase a Christmas gift from Etsy to show my support for this cause. Having that control and knowing the gift was hand crafted, without supporting slavery, was a gift in itself.

I am trying to be more conscientious of where I'm buying things, making sure I don't support slavery. It is so hard when places like Walmart promote such low prices in an economy like this, but I can only believe there have go t to be other alternatives.

This story reminded me a lot of Blood Diamond. Same situation, same abuse and taking advantage of children. Truly a tragedy in my opinion.

  • Mainstream Media Calls Teen Sex Trafficking Victim a Criminal
Melissa commented on the article | over 2 years ago

I think that "technically," police can not release the names of minors until they are convicted, but if the media got hold of that detail from other reliable sources, then "technically" they have the right to publish it. Do I agree with it, maybe not, but I think this is where the legalities lie.

I also think that Jazmine should have to serve some kind of punishment because, like you said Amanda, it seems she knew what she was doing when she was getting these other girls to join her, and it seems she enjoyed it. It doesn't sound like coercion, but then again, perhaps there were other factors that play into the reason she got into prostitution in the first place.

I think you make a good point Slim Chance. If we want to see change, we have to actually do something about it, not just talk about it. Be doers. Its the only way we can start seeing things get done in the name of justice for these women.

  • London Considers Axing Human Trafficking Police Unit
Melissa commented on the article | over 2 years ago

I think that authorities are not fulling understanding the severity of these crimes. This is not the area to make budget cuts when there are still so many out there being kept in slavery. Instead of making cuts, they should be expanding on this task force to help make a difference. I hope London rethinks this decision, I'm a fan of the city, but not if they support human trafficking.

Great post. You gave great advice that I'd like to hear more about. Too many people misunderstand human trafficking and its severity and think making extravagant gestures will help these women out of these situations. Your advice to volunteer and donate and get involved with a supporting organization instead seems logical and would benefit these victims in the long run.
