How could a human being obtain such a beautiful creature, look into that face, and still want to kill it? Al-Sayed will be a hero to very few, and a villain to many. His life will have no meaning if he continues with this cruel stunt. Succeeding in this, means he will have no chance for success in any future efforts. Humans everywhere will never have any respect for Al-Sayed as-Essawy.

"Al-Essawy said he will use an iron shield and dagger to defend himself but will kill the lion with his own hands."
If he has a big knife, he will have to use it. It's unlikely he can hold a shield and a dagger and still kill the lion with his hands. If the lion were to win, it would probably be put down, so it's hopeless for the lion. Since the lion is dead either way, let's hope he prevails over Al-Sayed. That will be one less cruel human, with no respect for non-human life, walking on this disturbed planet.

I am not, per se, anti-hunting. I live in near wilderness and most of the local people around me hunt deer and such. They eat what they hunt (I didn't see Parsons eating ele, so..) and because of (sadly) the loss of natural predators, hunting plays a part of conservation and a balance of numbers. So, don't lay that accusation of "bunny hugger" on me. My conservation philosophies are based on sound conservation, biology, and the proper balance of nature.

Also, please, no more of this "Parsons is a hero of Zimbabwe villagers" baloney. He killed an elephant because he enjoys killing elephants. I have been deeply involved with wildlife for almost a 1/4 century and know a load of hypocritical manure concerning wildlife, when I hear it. He should just admit it and skip the whitewash rhetoric. He's not the first one to pay for an organized "hunt" on eles, and won't be the last. he will take his lumps in business for it, but I'm sure he has far more income than he needs, so shouldn't mind any losses. If he has to end up laying off some employees to maintain his profit margins, so what. Those employees won't mind being unemployed, right?...

We all create our own reality, but that doesn't mean it's right. He has made his bed and he will sleep in it. Maybe that young female ele will visit him in his dreams while he sleeps in that bed. He can lie to himself, and he can lie to the public but there is no ethical high ground that can be built on lies. Sorry for the long post(s). I will not debate what I have typed here, I'm done. Thank-you.

I am Patrick Webb, President of National Wildlife Humane Society. We are a global nonprofit wildlife conservation organization. We deal with wildlife issues based on biology and science. We have 6 conservation allies in African nations, from Kenya, to Nigeria to Botswana (adjacent to Zimbabwe). http://www.humanewildlife.org

Parsons claims he's a hero for feeding the local villagers elephant meat for a few days. For $30 grand, he could have fed them for a year. Or, he could have built fences, or set them up in the bee keeping business (keeps eles away and adds income). His enormous ego won't allow him to simply admit he enjoys killing big beautiful iconic species. Not only have the numbers of elephants dropped in Zimbabwe, the real population numbers are widely believed to be far lower than stated by Mugabe's (President) regime. Familiarize yourself with his regime to understand why, and to also understand why poverty is rampant there. It's not the presence of elephants that cause it. Elephants are a source of tourism dollars which is far more sustainable income than rigged hunts.

For those who don't understand the nature of elephants, the killing of this young female (not a "rogue bull") has impacted her family, and there stands a chance that the elephants will return for retribution. That can occur any time, as elephants have strong "imprint type" memories. The old saying that "elephants never forget" is more than just an old wive's tale, it has some basis in fact. Where will Parsons be if this occurs?

Human/elephant conflict occurs in many places, as wild habitat shrinks and human population explodes. Many places employ very successful deterrents and conflict mitigation is an enormous conservation issue. These contrived hunts, for immediate huge financial gain, circumvents long term conservation efforts. They also cripple lucrative tourism, because as ele numbers decline (as well as other iconic species) that draw tourists, there is less to see. It also creates a tense situation for tourists. They don't spend big bucks to go to a place where blood sport is active.
