For me the challenge is really bringing the online interest offline. Its "easy" to get a lot of people to follow a certain topic but its a lot harder to get those people to actually do something about it.
Take this site for example. I'm getting invitations every day to different causes and actions. It is really easy to just hit accept and be follow some cause that I might have some interest in. Its a whole different challenge to get me to do call, protest, sign or do something that will really drive change.
I think there is a lot of potential as we have seen. It will be interesting to see if in the next year organization can drive this type of participation.
This is great idea. What an opperunity for someone to really experience another country and do something meaingful at the same time. I need to get started on my entrey!
Wow thanks for the link Nathaniel!
Does pop tech publish videos of the speakers? I would love to see some of these talks!
Neat idea. I think the last centery was about making things and the next centery is about making things in a better way.
Nathaniel I have to agree with you on this one. Why should it matter people's reason's for giving.
If it makes them feel better about there life or their day then I say let them.
You got exactly right philanthropy is an experience. Kiva taps into that and they are great at it.
Saying that are misleading people might be a little true but I don't think its fair.
Andrew I completely agree with you that many non-profits are too bureaucratic and don't focus enough on making change happen. That is one reason why I love the idea of social entrepreneurship. To me its a real challenge mix business with social change.
I won't deny that there is a lot of miss information on the Internet, but over all I think it has been a driving force for positive change. I know that much of my own work has been helped by the Internet and I would not be able to do half of the things I have done with out it.
It cuts down so many barriers and allows great ideas to grow. Take Kiva.org for example. To me it is a key example of the power of the Internet and of a new way of thinking. I only hope that one day I am able to do something on the level of that.
I do agree with everyone here that says its quality not quanity that counts. That being said I don't think 4K+ followers is a bad thing, but they will have to really work to do something with them.
What would actually be helpful is if twitter asked what topics people were interested in and THEN suggested people to follow. A lot more focused and that could be worth a $1,000,000.
Sounds like an interesting book. I will definately check it out.
I would also say that by helping create the internet they were doing a lot for social change. I wonder if they had an idea of the impact it would have as they created it.
I guess it goes to show that you never know the impact of your actions.
