  • The Media Loves Business Class Homelessness
Gregoire commented on the article | almost 2 years ago

Unfortunately, the current celebrity culture is so twisted that not only do we enjoy stories of "rags to riches", but we practically prefer stories of "riches to rags".

"Ha ha, look at him, last year he was raking it in, now he's LESS THAN ME".

That unfortunately is a very common way of thinking in 2010. Instead of looking to improve ourselves and our environment, we prefer lowering ourselves to the level of Jerry Springer.

  • It's Time to Change the Definition of "Homeless"
Gregoire commented on the article | almost 2 years ago

Thanks for the information Trish, segmenting the various types of homelessness is definitely an improvement over what is utilized in the USA (according to the article), and here in Canada.

I've thought we could turn the definition around and define "Proper housing". What is "proper housing"? Do we (as a society) accept our own compatriotes living on the streets, under bridges, in homeless shelters, hostels, hotels, boarding houses, or moving from "couch to couch" as "properly housed"?

If we define "Proper housing" (loosely) as: "A safe and secure roof over one's head, access to a kitchen and bathroom (even shared), and decent (specifics not established) privacy."

As simple as this may sound at first glance, there are over 3,000 (officially, although it's closer to 5,000 in reality) people who don't even come close to that in Vancouver, BC., Canada (where I reside) alone.

Part of the homelessness problem as you all know is directly related to substance abuse and mental illness, so part of the "Proper Housing" definition would have to include access to medical assistance.

  • American Girl's Latest Doll is Homeless
Gregoire commented on the article | over 2 years ago

More than likely Parent Dish are well-meaning with this doll, hoping it can help parents A) Understand that homelessness can (and does) happen to children, and B) Help said parents educate their children about it.

My difficulty with this resides in the fact that with it being a doll it's "not real", it's "just a story".

Just like "Malibu Barbie" is ficticious ("No honey "we" will never live in (or know people from) Malibu"), well "we'll never be (or see) homeless little girls".

So as well-intended as they may be, Parent Dish are in the business of selling toys.

  • Can People Be Forced Into Shelter?
Gregoire commented on the article | over 2 years ago

As previously noted, this is strictly a political and public relations move by the BC government.

If they do go through with this, they would have to create new shelters (temporary ones as it is for times of "extreme weather conditions").

What they (conveniently) omit to say is that they would only force those in the city of Vancouver (IE. Where the Olympics are being held).

They won't do jack for those in Kelowna, Kamloops or Prince George (which by the way much colder weather than Vancouver).

This government is actually in it's 3rd term. Yes, 3rd term, which means they have been governing for over 8 years, and NOW WITH THE OLYMPICS HERE they suddenly decide they'll "help" the homeless.

    Beyond hypocrisy.

"...enabling alcohol consumption for alcoholics may be counter-intuitive..."

So is the idea of giving billions of dollars to companies who ran themselves into the ground.

  • Can People Be Forced Into Shelter?
Gregoire commented on the article | over 2 years ago

This is nothing but a political move. As mentioned in the article, the death of a homeless woman last year, AND the winter Olympics being held here (Vancouver) this coming February are the true reasons the government is looking into (as it has not been legislated yet) making this into law.
