John, I can see where you're coming from, but I have to disagree. Wearing a "Support Gay Marriage" shirt or pin could be construed as making a "charged political statement", but a wearing a rainbow bracelet? Heck, that's not even directly saying anything about gay, not really. When did a simple rainbow get such a bad rap? Even though now it is an obvious allusion to homosexuality, it's still just a rainbow. I have plenty of straight friends who like rainbows because their pretty. Period.
The t-shirt is a bit loud, so *maybe* the "charged political statement" argument can used there, but I would bet money that if someone came in that same school wearing a "Choose Life" shirt (overtly anti-abortion), they wouldn't get the same treatment. I myself am pro-life, and gay, and I think both should be allowed, but if you're going to ban one, you have to ban both. I mean, she's a 9th grader. High school is plenty old enough to draw the assumption that the students can handle *some* political discourse. Heck, some of her schoolmates are old enough to vote already. School (especially high school, and then college) are meant to not only educate, but prepare the students for outside life, and if they can't handle a little politcal statement once in a while, then they're going to be in a world of hurt.
Don't blame the entire state for the actions of a single school district. Fayetteville, for instance, is one of the more tolerant and diverse cities I've ever been to.
I understand that Arkansas has a bad rap for being a "Bible-thumper state", but it's not like that everywhere in the state. Fayetteville High School, for instance, had the first school-sponsored GSA (gay-straight alliance) in the country, and as a former student there, it was by and large a very accepting school, and city in general.
I came out as a lesbian in 1996 there, as an 8th grader, and never receive any rebukes from teachers (the students were another story, but that's neither here nor there, and it was only a select few students anyways).
Besides, Ft. Smith is known for being pretty backwards, and is on the border of OK, which I think is part of it's problem. No offense to any Okies who may read this, but it should be ranked along with Alabama and Georgia as one of the more "conservative" states out there. Just sayin'.
Mario, I'm sorry if you thought I was being cruel, but I seriously honest to God have a hard time reading your posts. Sometimes I can follow the general meaning, but overall I can't understand them. I'm not intending this to be cruel, though I can admit that my last post was perhaps more harsh than I intended it to come out.
I don't know what it is about them, they're just very unclear most of the time. Maybe it's the grammar or something? I don't know. Is English your 2nd language?
I dated a Wiccan for a while, and I must say, you are the only other Wiccan/Christian couple I've come across.
Congrats on making it work!
And I've seen you on other message boards, as well. Just want to give a shout out to you for standing up for us homos. Even people who are accepting of the gays, sometimes seem to be leery of taking a stand on our behalf. So... good times!
