  • Why Do Women Have to Go to Special Clinics for Abortions?
Michelle commented on the article | about 2 years ago

I once heard a similar question ("why can't women just go to hospitals?") asked of Dr. Susan Wickland--abortion provider, author of "This Common Secret," and as fiercely dedicated an advocate for women and for repro health as I have ever seen. Her response was this:

Most abortions don't NEED to be done in hospitals. The typical early abortion, she said, takes about 5 minutes to perform: why would you want to mandate that women check themselves into hospitals for a five-minute procedure, when you can't even walk through the doors of a hospital for under a four-digit price tag?

Now, if you're asking why are there hospitals that WILL NOT provide abortions---that is a fair and eminently pertinent question. If you're asking why do the shouting maniacs who lurk outside clinics always make the assumption that someone walking into a "regular clinic" that happens to provide abortions is, indeed, going for an abortion, I too would love to know. If you're fantasizing about a world where such a quick, simple, no-cutting, everyday, 1-in-3-American-women procedure can be done in any OB/GYN's office the same way you'd schedule a pap smear, I'm right there with you.

But be careful in thinking that hospitals could be an answer to any of these problems, without radical and systematic reform of the sort that the right wing would happy kill 45,000 Americans a year to prevent.

Ken--please check your change.org DMs! P.S. I'm a fan of your site and delighted to hear that your people will come to Nebraska. Thanks for all you do!

Thanks for this post. Everything you said is right on. With maybe just the possible exception of limiting the call to action to "everyone who is near Omaha." I'm on the East Coast and I'll be there! It feels like the least I can do for a very brave physician and friend to women.

BTW, Kansas NOW is organizing the defense effort, despite Dr. Carhart's clinic being in Nebraska. Years ago, Operation Rescue moved to Kansas specifically for the purpose of harassing Dr. Tiller, so they are well acquainted with these particular wingnuts. They have info on how folks can attend, or support their efforts, at http://ksnow.org/KS_NOW/Rally_in_Support_of_Dr._Carhart.html . Thanks again!
