I am a retired professor of behavioral psychology. Punishment or aversive conditioning is never, ever appropriate, and certainly not torture as described here. Positive reinforcement is the recommended and successful means of modifying behavior. Sounds as though it's the staff whose behavior needs modifying -- first, fire them, then train a new crew in appropriate methods.
There is nothing good to say about Walmart. They destroy small businesses, they screw their suppliers who are then forced to pay their workers even less, they don't respect their employees or let them unionize or pay them decently or give them adequate fringe benefits. They have been a disaster for America. And they're too rich and too powerful.
