Heather,
Thanks SO much for this timely post. Social media has been absolutely transformative for our startup (Aylluinitiative.org, @ayllu) and this article is one of the best I've read in the 3 months that we've been part of the tweet/blogosphere. It's also really timely, since last week our team grew from 2 people to 4, and we found both new members through twitter. All of us are communicating virtually, seeing as we are in 4 countries (Canada, US, Philippines, Brazil).
One of our new additions will be responsible for social media. We've been discussing social networking sites: As a startup with next-to-no-budget, our social media volunteer is limited regarding time and how many social networking sites he can actually manage. Our goal is to get profiles on many sites, and then to choose a few to really build a presence on. Are we right to assume that after a certain point being on all these sites has diminishing returns? How many sites should we be on given our very early-stage/limited resources of time/energy/$$. Do you have suggestions of which ones (Besides facebook, myspace, and change.org) we should prioritize?
Thanks!
Melissa
