Thanks Rosetta for another thoughtful post.  Another way is to really care about your org's mission/issue.  Nonprofit execs generally are very, very personally passionate about the mission.  Who doesn't like being surrounded by equally passionate folks.

re: Professional Development - people should really look beyond conferences and training as the only/best way to get professional development (yes, heresey from someone who works at arguably the largest nonprofit training organization).  For example volunteering on a nonprofit board will give individuals experience in areas such as strategy, fundraising, and finance at an executive level.  Here's one example: when I was a "young" I served on the YNPN board when it was just getting started.  As a group, we all gained important experience on how to run/start/grow an organization, teamwork, leadership, marketing, fundraising, and strategy.  Many folks from that board went on to be ED's and executive level managers in nonprofits.

Other "free" ways to get profession development:

    - Attend your own organization's board meeting.

    - If you're working on funded projects/programs, read the proposals and look at the budget.  If you don't understand budgets, you can ask the person who put it together to help you understand it.

    - take leadership on a special project that your organization needs.  Examples include: office moves, researching something new that org wants to do that you have a person interest in or talent for (example, how your nonprofit might use social networks)

    - Join special committees in the organization (and take some a leadership role too).
