The news about the killings and rapes in the Kivu, DR Congo, have sometimes been like old stories of olden empires, very old history that often many people wonder why to care, why to know...why when these are happening in the third word, far away from their homes ... but why to stress!
Us from this country, particularly from the Kivu region, these are real stories of our lives. We no longer have tears to cry, but each sun set we wonder whose house will be raid; each sunrise we wonder whose mother or sister will be ambushed by them (militias) in the farm yard. We, each hour, silently listen to the woman's voice helplessly screaming and when the torturing cry overcomes our fear, with our juvenile boys' legs we ran to their rescue and we both come back unconscious in mourning arms of our beloved ones, waiting for our burial. These are our stories.
I am Jamala Safari, Congolese student, poet and writer (From Bukavu, South Kivu) living in Cape Town. I've heard about the amazing contribution of Jocelyn Kelly toward rebuilding lives of Kivu women. I know Jocelyn Kelly is in Cape Town currently, I missed her evening talk at the alliance Française.
I am organizing a one day event (August 23, 2009) on the Forgotten war of Congo, looking at the social and geopolitical causes and consequences of it. Moreover, I am currently working on couple of books that find their voices in the tormenting rhythm of guns and cries of the Kivu region.
Would you please pass my contact to Jocelyn Kelly as she is still in Cape Town and see if there is a possibility.
