Not only was the original "joke" rude and insensitive towards adoptees, but the responses to those of us who have blogged our outrage have been equally offensive. I've posted a followup to my original 73adoptee blog, responding to these comments and addressing the mistaken notion that adoptee discrimination "doesn't exist".
Not only do adoptees face discrimination, but we are vilified if we call people on it.
Since I'm the one who apparently started this pot boiling... I wrote the following blog after seeing Avengers on opening night. As a Marvel fangirl (who spends a lot of money on comics) I was insulted at the use of "He's adopted" as a cheap throwaway one-liner. Joking about adoption isn't funny. Joking about being adopted isn't funny. Making fun of a late discovery adoptee is especially not funny. But adoptees remain one of the last fair sources of discriminatory humor. http://73adoptee.blogspot.com/2012/05/avengers-why-is-making-fun-of-adoption.html
