Norman commented on the article |We need to find alternative forms of punishment for non-violent drug offenders. When you give someone a prison record,you effectively reduce their life earning possibilities so much,that many times,in order to provide the same advantages and marerial goods for his family,a drug offender will go back into the drug scene,just to make enough money.
It is a vicous circle,and locking people up for drugs is not an effective method of dealing with the problem,since we have been locking people up for marijuana for over 40 years,and there are more people doing marijuana,more marijuana available and a very good chance that California will legalize marijuana,this year.
We have the technology to set up a different form of punishment for drug offenders,with ankle monitors and other forms of containment,without building a prison and having to pay for incarceration,when we can remove most of the privelages of freedom,while the "criminal" supports his/her own family and himself/herself. With community service and even weekend lockups thrown in.
