I grew up around the AKC and their dog shows. My older brother owned several "champions." Since that time I have come to hate the organization and the people who continue to support it. They have destroyed great working breeds of dogs through such close inbreeding and promote unhealthy dogs based solely on how they look and not how they function. When I take my little rescued Cockapoo to the dog park I often have to bite my tongue forcefully. Just recently I came across a woman who was bragging about her rare purebred dog that was just recognized by the AKC. She went on and on about how spectacular this dog was. Then she pulled out a bottle of Pedialyte water for kids. She explained her dog can't drink tap water because the breed is prone to kidney problems. Then she remarked that her dog could only eat baby food because of digestive issues and allergies. I wanted to scream at her for thinking that consigning a dog to a lifetime of health issues for looks was acceptable. She then had the nerve to tell me that I shouldn't allow my dog to jump (one of her favorite activities) because she was so small and would "damage her hips." Really? My dog is a healthy mutt and can even drink water right out of the tap. I loathe the AKC and its sister organizations and what they stand for - the appearance of loving dogs without actually loving dogs.
