Eugenics on the disabled was practiced by the Nazis. We are supposed to be beyond such evil in our modern society.

There is not more than one perspective when persecution is trumpeted as social norm. Oh, but don't rock the boattoo much, let's just go  slowly and allow another generation of women to be brutalized and degraded.

I also don't consider teaching women that the are equal human beings, entitled to their sexuality, freedom and sense of self, imposing our beliefs on them. Human Rights is not the purview of the western world it is the purview of all humanity.

How can there be more than one legitimate perspective. FGM is the disenfranchisement of a women's sexuality. It is foisted upon women within patriarchichal societies which curtail and deride women and their right to self.

I am tired of this nonsense about it being part of a culture so we have to tread lightly or there are two sides to any issue. It only seems that there are two sides when it is the women who are being brutalized and denied theri civil right to self-determination.

The truth of the matter is, if the women of the societies stood up and said no then what would the men do? Instead the communities (women included) threaten expulsion or worse for non compliance. The problem however, is that instead of saying no, the practice of FGM is being brought to western nations and practiced underground. Many west European nations have actually had to outlaw the practice because of its prevalence within the immigrant community legal and non-legal.

I don't think its a genetic anamoly about beauty, I think its the overall pervasiveness of American culture. Hollywood is so ingrained into the daily lives of the planet that people even in 3rd world countries don't realize that they reject their own sense of self for this artifical reality. What about the Chinese women having plastic surgery to round their eyes? Remembre that report form years ago?

    Hi Erin,

This is very nice to know about the ACLU. I would suggest then that they get a better PR person. Because having been involved in the disability community for almost 15 years I have never heard of them working in support of anyone like Jonathan. Nor have I read an amicus curae from them. Do you have any citations that I could read. The url above was mainly talking points. I would love to get their lawyers read on several issues, especially since my oldest is in college and is entering unchartered waters, so to speak.

    Thanks.

How absolutely evil. The ACLU wories about guantanamo, people who want to blow us up and chop our children' heads off, but noone worries about the Jonathans. Where is the ACLU and their civilr ights for our children?

There is nothing wrong with kiddie stuff. I still remember my uncles laughing their heads off during the road runner/coyote cartoons. And hey, look at Comic-con. Everything in life does not have to be serious and boring. People are allowed joy in their world, and the joy of a simple toy or cartoon is ok in my book. God forbid any of us get too old to relish the laughter.
