While I have no issue with the pragmatic spirit of the caregiver bill of rights, you should think long and hard about what message you are sending a semantic oriented individual under your care. Where is the corresponding care receivers bill of rights on your fridge? Where are the responsibilities of each posted?
There is an Institutionalized Disenfranchisement of patients from medical care because of disparate clinicians not properly exchanging information and ideas and facts to match disorders to optimum treatments. They all have a book to write, so bank on it and semi retire and have some fun instead of talking to the insane all day. In my country it goes across all mental health issues. They are regarded as disobedient because they have mutations that make them different. Societies around the globe I have seen this to be an issue. Across the treatment of our sick our hungry and our poor, our down trodden, every individual has a gift to provide and we are systematically excluding sources of great wealth for our species because we are afraid they might act funny.
Spot on Jared. This is what I was trying to say and continue to try and say every day of my life. Thank you for being somebody who can understand where an autistic individual like myself is coming from.
Autism is not something you have. Autistic is something you are. Your brain is physically different. You are on the spectrum because you have one or more of a set of physiological differences from the norm. These differences in your brain alter the way in which you intake stimulus. Which differences you have will greatly affect this.Don't demean my reality with your frustrations finding support for your child. This is not a cutesie little club, this is my life. We are a minority born into geographic isolation in a majority that tells us we don't actually exist.
It very much is about whether recovery is possible whether or not you mean it that way. As a child I presented all the symptoms for classical autism, but nobody knew to be looking for them. At this stage in my life, I present my self as a Professional because that is how I wish to be seen. To claim that my ability to navigate certain social circumstances undoes the fact that my brain is just wired differently, is simply an insult. To say I am now Recovered, says that before I was not whole. I was broken. I lacked. Something was taken from me that I got back. That is not at all what happened. I learned how to relate to a society that perceives their environment in a manner different from the way I do.I didn't have the understanding of people around me, my parents, to help me channel my frustration and anger and rage in an appropriate manner, I was constantly told I was not allowed to be upset with the injustices perpetrated against me by people who just did not get it. I now have a lot more of that understanding. I feel like I can attempt to talk about how my brain works without people telling me I am a liar or a baby or a schizophrenic. So instead they tell me I am recovered.
The distinction between the two areas of support is artificial because the variance in support required between two adults in the spectrum can be as wide as that between an adult and a child in the spectrum. It is artificial because there can be no expectation that simply by having aged symptoms will be alleviated.
