I grew up in the Lakeview area in Chicago, went to Lakeview HS and have a daughter and grandson who still live on Chicago's north side. MB Financial would do well to exhibit courage and compassion in supporting the work of the Night Ministry. They are what community service and leadership is all about.

  • On Health Care: The Wal-Mart Effect in Washington
Barbara commented on the article | over 2 years ago

Sorry Greg, that sounds like "damned if you DO, and damned if you DON'T".  I, for one, am glad to have Wal-Mart coming down on the correctside of the question for a change.  And speaking of change, I may be wrong, but I understand there have been some recent changes at the top in Wal-Mart's management team.  Could it be the mega-retailer has seen the error of its ways?

At any rate, I am passionate about health care reform, so I am happy to have Wal-Mart on board.

I will probably catch some flack for this --- but, well, here goes.

Michael was a fantastic talent -- and a profoundly damaged, tortured  human being.  I believe he was  sincerely loving and kind in his heart --- but he never learned how to truly love himself.

How often do I hear young ones say, "When I grow up, I want to be a Rock Star"...   The lifestyle, the attention, the glamour is so seductive to our kids --- but Michael is an example of all that can go wrong when kids don't have a positive solid sense of who they are and their real worth -- just for themselves...

As I watch the tributes on TV, I see the young Michael, who desperately needed to be recognized --- not as Michael, the STAR -- but Michael, the boy.  My heart weeps for him, Michael -- the boy, and for all the kids who have traded in their childhood for fame --- and also for all the kids who must sacrifice their childhood to poverty. Michael, I think would have understood that.

Make no mistake, they are not merely numbers --- they are young lives!  I pray for each and every child in poverty, that there will be one adult in their life who will help them see their worth --- someone who will shield a child from the stigma of growing up in poverty --- and give that child a chance to be a STAR in his or her own heart.

    Rest In Peace, Michael
