Cutting taxpayer subsidies is a great idea; it would dismantle the large corporations that enslave and slaughter nonhuman animals. As for going vegan, it's a moral imperative and needs to be front and center of our advocacy. We must build the social movement to end human tyranny over other animals.
Fatalist and speciesist attitudes will only ensure that humans continue to dominate and control other animals through breeding and other unjust practices. I'm taking a stand for what is right.
"Responsible breeding" is an oxymoron. Millions of nonhuman animals are killed in so-called "sheters" each year as greedy breeders create more to sell for profit. Purebred means inbred which brings genetic problems. Each new bred dog, cat, or other nonhuman animal is abducted from their mother early in life and sold as chattel property for the pet trade. Humans need to stop dominating other animals and instead respect their lives and liberty.
I second these comments. This blog is the only reason I came to change.org. It's sad that the "welfare" message is all nonhuman animals will get now at this website. They need a voice for justice!
I cannot recommend this book high enough. It's excellent!
For a quick overview of some of the problematic language, Joan Dunayer wrote an article for English Today, called "English and Speciesism":
Dunayer also produced a handout called "Avoiding Speciesist Terms" that the grassroots abolitionist group I run distributes. Feel free to printout and use, too:

We shouldn't even call them "shelters" if they kill healthy dogs, cats, and other "unwanted" animals. A better term, suggested by author Joan Dunayer, is "adoption and killing facility." True shelters are by definition no-kill.
