  • The Nuclear Alternative to Coal
Hartmut commented on the article | over 2 years ago

In comparison to Europe, especially Germany, it seems to me that a discussion about the utilization of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is possible in the US and not always driven by scary pictures about Hiroshima. I totally agree with Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson who is saying that nuclear power ought to be a part of the nation's energy mix because there have been hugh developments in science and under safety aspects / measures.
One can not compare the status of the 70ties with today's insights. The environmental changes have still reached us and we should not loose valuable time in further discussions and act immediately. Moreover, if one assess the energy policy of China which is setting up a new coal power plant nearly every week. A global crisis comes global and effects us all and not only one singular country.

Of course we should not stop our efforts in developing solar and wind power however, they have to get subsidized with huge ammounts of money. If our economies are getting back on track the government should invest more in these technologies and support private investments like announced yesterday in Germany. Leading corporations like Siemens, RWE, Deutsche Bank are planning to create and joint-venture under the name of Desertec and building Solar Power Plants in Africa for about 400 billion Euros and supplying the energy back to Europe.

This is the needed foresight for an efficient energy mix - however, long-term projects planning must be conducted with an eye to the furture. Hartmut Rast

  • A Lesson from Iran for Social Entrepreneurs

Indeed, it is very inspiring and seems incredibly easy how young Iranian's started their movement to change the current situation in Iran with using facebook, twitter, text-messages and the other tools. However, it is very difficult to get a full picture of the real situation and judge to early and through western eyes. The Iranian mentality is very different from European behaviour and I would not be suprised if the sticking-to-his-power Ahmadinejad ought to suppress the unrest in brutal manners. Seeing the restless committment by Nathaniel Whittemore with using his possibilities to give the voiceless a voice and raising awareness about social responsibilities gives me hope that we can handle the up-coming challenges effecting the world as a whole. Hats off !

  • Orthodoxy or Reevaluation at the G20?
Hartmut commented on the article | almost 3 years ago

More and more I've been coming to the estimation that the G20 Summits are a closed circle of club-members only interested in their own good like most of our leaders meanwhile. Therefore, I am thinking that discussions about new regulations are a total waste of time.

What we need is a conversation about values and ethical behaviour which is not only driven by greed to making money cost what it may.

I grew up in a time where it was an unspoken rule to be gentle and considerate towards the people in our society. Of course we had our CEO's and how one calls them today. However, in my view they had also something like a code of ethics which included to give John Doe work untill he retires and thanking him in this way for more than 40-hard-working-years to the benefit of the company.

Seeing the reckless behaviour nowadays I have my doubts if there is a sensitivity not to say empathy for the society its leaders also have to serve to in some way - not only at the gala dinners by Charity's for being effective as publicity.

Responsible leadership doesn't exclude technological progress by itself but it ought to implement high morals and should not lead to double standards. Maybe a new subject for our high class university's - wasn't it called Management by Ethics in the old days?  Hartmut Rast, New York
