That's basically my case. I have AS, and so far, anything that has a function that reminds me of what should I do has worked great to improve my life. First it was a watch with room for 10 alarms; after it died, I replaced it with my cell phone. Combined with my iPod for my favorite music (since I can't afford to a modern smartphone), this has proved to be the best way to keep my life on track.

  • So Far Today, 850 People Have Said "Fag" on Twitter

I would so like to see how GLSEN would react to the language used in 4chan-influenced sites, where everybody is called "-fag" to the point that this word has even lost its derogatory meaning, to the point that amateur writers proudly call themselves "writerfags", visual artists call themselves "drawfags", those who are from Europe call themselves "Eurofags", and so on. The only exceptions to the rule are those who pretend to be Anonymous but fail in the process ("anonfags") and those who are into Scientology ("xenufags" or "scifags").

  • Sarah Palin, Future Advocate for Disabilities?

I'm definitely not sure about putting Sarah Palin as a mentally ill rights leader. If there's something I learned recently, it's that the mentally ill must be treated like humans, not pets. Babying them, giving them everything they want and telling them what they do is because they're autistic they can't help it, that's treating them like a pet.

Giving them love and care and at the same time asking for discipline and good behavior in return, as far as their abilities go, that's treating them like humans.

  • Deadly Roads Are Not Just a Metaphor

Very interesting question indeed. Traffic accidents are another cause worth fighting for due to all the people who die like this every year. How come I've never thought about that?

Here in Mexico, streets are a complete chaos and people die all the time. There is no such thing as a road safety culture. Road etiquette is more like the law of the strongest one, in this case, the law of the one with the biggest vehicle (e.g. a Lincoln Navigator or a bus). You see people jaywalking the highway under a pedestrian bridge all the time! And I'm not afraid to admit it, I have repeatedly sped at 160 km/h in the urban highway, and yet I've never got a single fine. And this is in Guadalajara, where people still have some civility behind the wheel... in Mexico City, it's not rare to see like 5 cars honking at you because you stopped at a red light instead of skipping it...

Abstinence is doomed to failure. Why? Because the more you preach against it and socially forbid it, the more it becomes tempting.

It's like, hey, the teacher just said sex is wrong, but I'm damn sure she's hiding something, all the guys and everyone in TV says it's awesome! You don't want to be a snooty prude like the teacher, do you? We're young, we're just 13 years old, we totally gotta enjoy this! Come on, girl, sex, now!

  • Family Values FAIL
Acoyani commented on the article | over 2 years ago

Exactly. By own experience, people who are truly pious and holy never, ever go in public telling this. They just say "I try to live a healthy life". Those who say so are people who are trying to hide their secret vices they love but were raised to feel guilty about them.
