  The Case of Pvt. Joshua Fry

  Seems like a good time to mention that NCLB (Section 9528)requires that schiools give miltary recruiters contact information on all students UNLESS the student / family requests to "opt-out" in writing. Many schools will tell you that it isn't possible to opt-out, but it is.

  
  

  You can find out more from the Quakers or the ACLU (both organizations will have forms you can use). Since our kids often tend to be, how shall I put this? gullible, and since Mr. Fry is not the only person on the autism spectrum who has been recruited who shouldn't have been, I think this is something all of us parents should consider.

  A Family's Story

  I feel compelled to respond to Joe's comment. I remember reading three years ago about the "futile care" case in Texas which is featured in the National Review article he links to. It is a truly horrifying story and should not be forgotten. But I don't think it has much to do with whether or not "care is provided by the state."
  
  The proof is of course that the United States is the only industrialized country without national health care, and as the NRO article shows, "futile care" (that's a little double-speak, isn't it, it should probably be "futile abdication") is here already.
  
  Every year, more than 18,000 Americans die because they are uninsured and can't get proper health care: www.usatoday.com/news/health/healthcare/2002-05-22-insurance-deaths.htm That's a lot of people we don't value enough to take care of and whom we're leaving to die. Countries with national health care don't have that statistic.

  Monday Autism News Potpourri

  Yes, to 1): in the past few months, I've seen both Aspergers and autism used as a put-down in various blog posts. Most of the time, the writer seemed to mean someone with anti-social or sociopathic tendencies, which goes to show how much they don't get it.
