First of all my heart goes out to all of you - suffering and struggling with basic human rights such as immigration. It really is a tough call between the country you love and the person you love and if your like me LOVE always conquers! When you love someone nothing else really matters and when your certain you want to spend the rest of your life with that person, we shouldn’t be denied the basic rights to be with that person, whether your opposite sex / same sex.
I am a British Citizen and my partner is from the US. Both professionals, both successful and both in love. To date we have been together around two years, I was actually working for an investment bank and doing some management training whilst over in NYC during 2007 and my partner works for a large media corporation. We met back in April 2007 and have been together for just under 2 years (wow anniversaries do creep up on you). 7 months of our relationship to date has been apart / long distance which is totally awful to say the least. We looked into various routes of having me stay in the US (its where we met and my partner has ties to the USA which he cant leave ) – education, employment etc and it is impossible to find sponsorship and impossible to get the funds together to do so (school is so expensive – especially when you just want to go for the F1 visa) – besides should we really have to go this far to be with our partners / family.
It really breaks my heart on a day to day basis to read other peoples stories and I really do wish you all the best. Like many of you I have also been back and forth (UK-US) like a ping pong ball for the last bit of time. However I have decided to stay firmly in the UK till the laws pass / change, professionally it makes sense though I must say I don’t wake up a single day without a broken heart or a tear in my eye through all the worry this has caused. It really is a heart wrenching and traumatic process having to leave the one you love cause you have run out of time on your visa. If we all believe hard enough – we CAN make this happen, so the next generation of same-sex couples do not have to experience such horrible and unjust discrimination. Its breaks my heart and I am sorry you all have to also go through this process.
