  • Won't Anyone Restrict Junk Food Advertising to Kids? Anyone at All?

    I doubt having the government step in will do any good. Kids tend to eat what's available to them. They don't do the grocery shopping (or at least they shouldn't). I don't even take my 2 kids to the store simply because I don't feel like having a public argument over potato chips. I do bring home Oreos every once in awhile and it's seen as a treat.  


    No regulation by the USDA will stop some parents from buying copious amounts of bad snack foods for their children. Heck, these parents probably enjoy the same foods as their kids. So be it... As much as I want people to get back in the kitchen and cook from scratch and eat lots of vegetables and fruit, I am also a realist. Some people just don't take eating or their food consumption seriously. They don't care what advertisers say. They'll buy the bag of Ruffles simply because they like it. 


    It's the American culture that needs to change. If we had a healthier outlook at food and cooking, like in France or Italy, where food is part of the culture, then we wouldn't need to have the USDA regulate advertising. 


    But hey, what do I know? I let my kids eat Oreos. 

  • How to Become a Sustainable Meat Eater

    Ah but what about vegetarians and vegans that eat conventionally grown vegetables and fruits? Conventionally grown meaning use of pesticides. That isn't very sustainable either. 


    The "plant-based" societies you bring up also drink goat's milk, eat eggs, and eat fish or other lean meats, albeit on a much smaller scale than those of us in the US. I'm thinking of those who live in southern Italy, Costa Rica, and Japan. Even in India, they take in some form of animal protein. 


    Keep in mind that vegan isn't for everyone. People just need to be aware of where their food comes from.

  • Too Many Celebrity Chefs in the Kitchen

    I used to watch the Food Network back when there was a little less competition and more cooking. I like Flay and Batali, but I wish there were some programs on the channel dedicated to actually teaching people how to cook. How about less Sandra Lee opening cans of processed food and putting them together in a crockpot and giving us more shows with real chefs?

    I'd rather eat in than eat out. Much better food and cheaper. Cooking isn't rocket science but I guess it is for some people.

  • Local vs. Organic: Which Is More Sustainable?

    As a student of Sustainable Food Systems at Montana State University, we are discussing this quite a bit in classes. 


    According to some -- local is the new organic. Even though there are a lot of organic growers that have gone through the certification process, there are a lot of local growers who have decided against the USDA organic seal, but yet they still abide by sustainable and/or organic growing practices. 


    When I'm faced with buying organic honey from Brazil or honey produced within a 100 miles of my home, I'm going to support the honey producer who is local. That way, the money I spend is going to an actual farmer who has chosen to sell his product at Farmer's markets or the local food co-op, rather than giving my money a big corporation.
