I agree with you Elesia. Lindt were obviously trying to do the right thing by supporting a charity, but just happened to pick one that is controversial and there is now a real backlash in that people are boycotting Lindt chocolate. It's such a shame.

"The child seems to be 'cut-off' from the world and as an observer, avoiding social contact and viewing other individuals as providers or observers, without seeming to require social interaction and not knowing how to initiate or partake in social situations." I agree with you, this kind of quote perpetuates the myth and the stereeotypical view that many people hold of people with autism. You don't expect an autism project to promote this view!!

I think many people do have stereotyped views of autism, either thinking that autistic people are "trapped inside their body" or thinking that they're savants like Dustin Hoffman in "Rainman". i guess that there will always be these stereotypes, however much we try to raise autism awareness!

  • Empowerment: Where Do You Get Your Information?
Chun commented on the article | almost 3 years ago

I feel really sorry for parents of children who have just been diagnosed with autism. The first thing that many of them do is google "autism" and then they immediately get overwhelmed. Researching using the internet and books is great, but, as you say, you need to be a "discerning critic" and draw out the useful stuff from the rubbish.

I agree that autism is a multifaceted or multifactorial disease. I do not believe that it is caused by one single thing, hence why different treatments are effective in different cases.

I have seen dietary changes work for some children, supplements work for others and HBOT work for still others. It all depends on what is triggering the autism symptoms.

I am pleased that autism is a priority for this government. It needs more research and families need supporting.

I think the bit about having a right to a "free and appropriate public education" just means that a free bus gives all children the opportunity to have a decent education, whether or not their parents have transport of their own. In this case it was cheaper for the authority to pay Mrs Torres to transport her children to school, rather than make special arrangements.

Me too - it says "authentification required" and that it is a protected area - weird!

By the way, a very interesting article. I'll be looking at Isaac's Wiki page.

It's so great that you're having time out and in such a beautiful country. I agree with Twyla about life being a balancing act and we all need to have time for ourselves, away from our normal everyday life, so that we can actually be better parents.
