We got Christine O'Donnell on the front page but not a word anywhere on Change.org about Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's rallies in Washington DC on 10/30/10.

This could be the political Woodstock of all our causes and its being ignored by nearly all liberal causes and media.

Stewart's announcement on Comedy Central's homepage has close to 1 million hits and Colbert's has nearly half a million. And we want to talk about the oppositon instead of showing up for us?

You've hit on something really important here. Perhaps the quickest route to having mariuana publicly accepted and legalized it to have hemp legalized for production of biofuels.

Hemp is 10 times more productive then corn when it comes to making ethanol and can be grown on far less than prime farm land.

It always amazes me that with all the clear evidence both past and present that prohibition of drugs (including alcohol) has never worked and never will that people want to completely ignore that fact and cling to the idea that it creates more good than harm when the opposite is obviously true.

And it also bothers me that people insist on clinging to the idea that all drug users commit criminal acts when the facts are the only crime most drug users commit is using a drug that is deemed illegal.

  • The View From Inside: Why We Need Prison Reform

Obviously your excellent first blog has been received as such and my compliments can only join the others.

So, instead allow me to ask you a few questions.

We know that the authorities are supposed to be running the prisons. But from what some recently released state and federal inmates have been telling me the authorities are only running the prisons on the outside, but the inmates, especially prison gangs are running on the inside. Would you say that's true or not?

Also I've read that we are actually making ourselves far less safe as a society because we send non-violent drug offenders to prison but in order to survive they end up becoming violent and gang affiliated before they are released. Do you see any evidence of that?

Finally is there any truth to the claim that the international drug trade is now being run by prison gangs already behind prison walls?

This is something I think we should try and work onto the debate every chance we get. Talk about green energy. We can supply 90% or our petroleum needs with hemp. One acre of hemp renewable annually is worth four acres of trees that take five years to grow. We can build anything from paste board boxes to houses with it. And it grows on far less then prime farm land and doesn't require as much water and fertilizer as other crops.

When you consider all the money we could make on taxes, all the money we could save on law enforcement and incarceration, the savings in heath care costs, plus green energy we can't really afford to keep cannabis illegal anymore.
