(Oh, and Happy Mother's Day, Kristina!)
Waldman's book was also reviewed in my local paper; I was happy to see that you had weighed in on it.
I have some mixed feelings, myself: I love that Waldman is willing to talk openly about her choice to get an abortion, and I also love that she's willing to write critically about the Cult of Motherhood, which I think is just a cheap imitation of a society that actually values mothers and children.
I don't love the unexamined attitudes toward people who are born different, though. (Though I *DO* think she is brave to write about deciding to abort). And I am disappointed that, for all her honesty and willingness to buck the expectation that she be the Perfect Mother, she couldn't also see past the Perfect Child mythos.I had no idea there was a move about the Refrigerator Mother thing; I'll have to check that out!
