There is probably as many drugs in prison as there is on the street. alcohol is a drug, it's just legal. I agree with Dave, rehab and prevention is the smart way to go. There are more people in prison for petty crimes (non-violent) attributed to drugs than there are violent criminals attributed to drugs. In Florida if you are stopped for anything, never admit to anything, and refusing a sobriety test, will cause you to lose your license, but you can appeal, but taking any of their tests will get you time in jail, either at the expense of the taxpayers (Prison) or at the expense of the county taxpayers (jail). Either way when you get out you will have learned how to be a better and more clever drug user, there is no serious rehab going on at either place. The best defense of course is if you drink, don't drive. If you are going to do drugs, you are probably going to get caught one day.
I agree, LAW AND JUSTICE never go hand in hand. And the bigger the lawyer the less likely you are going to spend much time in prison. But in order to fix the laws of your state, you have to go to the Legislature. There are much more powerful groups in Washington, ACLU, etc, they got the big guns covered, but we at the state level need to make our voices heard, the Governor of Florida in the Organizational Chart put the People of Florida at the top and everyone else falls under us, I love it, I use it all the time, it's one thing they can't ignore. Our large counties are smart in the fact that they plea bargain for a year and a day and toss them into the prison system out of their budget and into all the taxpayers money. This is one example of why we have so many inmates in our prisons along with the fact that most are non-violent drug offenders who shouldn't be there anyway. But in order to change it, you need to make your voice heard.
Bill I tried to sign up for the March of Freedom for Florida and received a "forbidden" 404 error.. HUM!
I hope that this action, takes place in every state, in Florida we are pushing also for reform, but we are also wanting rehab included, especially for hard core drug users. We tend to lock up the little folks, while the dealers keep right on dealing. Inmates go to jail for a year and a day here, so they can go into the State system, so the Counties don't have to take care of them. They get no rehab in prison, if anything they learn other "trades" that will land them back in the prison system, and there are so many drugs in our prisons that it doesn't really matter anyway, it's just a year and it is only 85% that they have to serve.
I think there are more people out there trying to do something than you know. I can only speak for my state, because it's in such a chaotic mess, but people are beginning to realize that they do not like paying for inmates who have short sentences and or non-violent offenders, because we are the "Lock them Up" state. I and many others write weekly to our House and Senate leaders to get change in sentencing procedures, it's not going to happen tomorrow, but everyone blames DOC when in fact the real people are the ones we elected to office. State Legislature is the way to fix, CA, FL, and TX and whatever state you are in. It's wonderful to want to fix the entire country but are we talking state or federal level? I advocate for the inmates in my state and changing our state laws, we can't continue to cut away at education and health programs and not Corrections. Whether you realize it or not, people read what you say, so never quit saying it, the tougher the times the more they will read, and act, it takes hard times for reality to set in sometimes.
oops should have used spell check..lol double S-C-A-R-E-E-E
