This was an unbelievably cruel and unjust act toward this dog. It pains me that there are people in this world that would be so mean, but what would be worse is if they were to get away with it. The only way animal cruelty will ultimately be prevented is by punishing those people who decide to act on cruel impulses.
I'm going to make an assumption and say that most of these farms have been around for generations. So why are neighbors complaining? If you don't want to hear farm noises, don't buy a house near a farm.
Although you're right about taxing products that are harmful not necessarily resulting in people avoiding those things, I still think taxing those products more is a great idea. These items (sodas, alcohol, candy, etc) are so bad that they result in health problems down the road. By using taxes made from the sale of such items, we could help pay for these rising health costs.
You also mentioned that you were suspicious of movements that focus mainly on school lunches. I think it's the idea that by educating children on how to make healthy food choices, you're setting them up for a lifetime of healthy eating.
A teacher taking away a student's from-home lunch is extreme, but really, I think it's great that a school is going this far. This is exactly what we want - for school lunches to cut out the sugary, processed junk food and replace it with healthy, nutrious foods. It's silly to look more into the burrito thing as a way to demonize this school's lunch program because it's a sole example of a teacher stepping over the line.
And as for not having cookies or other sugary desserts in school - kids can eat dessert at home. There is no reason for school lunches to include ice cream or cookies.
I hope more schools follow in this one's example. It is exactly what I would expect of healthy school lunches, and it isn't "too extreme."
I understand the concept, but I really don't think "retiring" Ronald McDonald will solve childhood obesity. It's far more important to fix school lunches and reduce sugar, salt, and fat in restaurant foods. And the biggest issue is to try to convince parents to feed their families healthy meals, which is itself a huge challenge when so much of the adult population is obese as well.
