My question is for HCAN: As President Obama said the other day, "we didn't get it done ... in recession, in booms, in wartime, peacetime ... we didn't get it done." One of the principal reasons "we didn't get it done" was the health insurance industry, which has fought meaningful health care reform for over 50 years. They invented the concepts of pre-existing conditions and cherry picking, gave us "Harry and Louise", and obfuscate the issue by using bizarre terms like "moral hazard". None of them ever made a profit paying a claim.
And now we have this demurre little sweetheart, Karen Ignani, president of America's Health Insurance Plans, saying "we really care this time around". Do tell, Karen! Why are we even considering giving these people a seat at the table? As someone said recently, the health insurance industry should not be at the table, they should be served on it. I can't understand why the liberal community, we folks who put President Obama into office, can't raise a ruckus loud enough to put them on the table. Let's get the knives and forks ready, people!
The cap is a critical point. We recently had a hospital bill of around $56,000 for a stay in May and June (fortunately, insurance paid it all, which is why I have my current job). This could mean that our maximum exposure would be $673 x 2, or $673 x n, with n=56,000/673. The devil is in the details. Still plenty of room for health insurance companies to rip you off.
Excellent article, Tim. It would be great if you could do a similar piece on #1, France.
Re: HHS Secretary: Tonight on the news I heard the name of Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon mentioned for this post. Here is the site explaining his health reform proposal: http://www.wyden.senate.gov/issues/Legislation/Healthy_Americans_Act.cfm The bill was introduced yesterday (Feb 5). The full text is at: http://www.wyden.senate.gov/issues/Healthy%20Americans%20Act/020609haa_bill.pdf
This bill looks serious. I haven't had the time to read it, but IT HAD BETTER MEET THESE CRITERIA (Tim Foley's "three-legged stool"):
1. Universal Coverage: not 95%, not 99%, but ***100%***!!!!
2. Every single American/American should be able to afford coverage and health care without fear of bankruptcy. Let the doctors do their jobs without being smothered by paperwork! Let us get care without arguing with insurance companies!
3. We must receive quality health care without fear of getting sick, injured, or killed by medical errors or insurance companies!
IS ANYONE IN WASHINGTON LISTENING????
Tim, what is your take on the health care provisions of H.R. 1 (the house econoimc stimulus package)?
