I am proud to call Steve a friend, and work along side him as a volunteer outreach worker and an animal welfare advocate . I have learned so much from Steve, and although my compassion level was with him, my knowledge of the issues surrounding homelessness certainly was nowhere near his. Thanks to Jeannie Alexander and Steve Samra, I am learning some pretty sobering and heart wrenching lessons, but you cannot help if you are not willing to learn. I would rather be heartbroken and with knowledge than happy and ignorant. To make a difference in someone's life who is without a permanent home is a feeling that you cannot describe or know unless you put yourself out there.

  • Update on the NC Pit Bulls: 146 Killed, Including Pups Born in Custody

It would be wonderful if we were as outraged at all of the dogs and cats (rabbits and rats and guinea pigs and all that come into shelters) who were killed. At the ones who also had no chance, because there are just too many born. Why direct our outrage at one breed, or at the folks who had to make tough decisions and stay awake at night thinking about that decision? There is no fair way to decide which animals live or which die, but until you have walked in the shoes of someone forced to make that decision, you have no idea. And can you safely place the 50, 80 or 100 that come into many shelters on a daily basis? And have you seen the homes that so many pits and rotties have? And have you wondered how on earth you can please some folks who want you to rehabilitate a few dogs when you have 50, 80 or 100 coming in every day? Have you ever seen how damaged they are when they come into your facility?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if those who love animals banded together and blamed the Michael Vicks and the other dog fighting thugs of all races - those who breed these aggressive dogs who end up in shelters and in the laps of an overworked, underpaid shelter managers who is tired of being attacked by the Ledy's of the rose-colored glasses world? Can we not begin to band together against those responsible for this mess rather than those left to deal with it and make hard, stay awake at night decisions?

You simply cannot place the bully breeds, wonderful as they can be, as you can some other breeds. Neither can you place a husky as you would a beagle, and so on and so on. We have to recognize that different dog breeds and mixes need to be placed in accordance with the type of dog that they are and the abilities of the person wanting to adopt. A husky, pit, rottie, heeler, dane, gsd or jrt can make a wonderful canine companion - but probably not for the timid or first time dog owner.

If we ever learn to get past our differences and stop blaming those in the trenches, we will be a force to be reckoned with for animals.
