  • Where's the Art in Autism Education? (& the music too)
Sharon commented on the article | over 2 years ago

The boys are lucky to have music & art part of their weekly classes. My older son loves music and excels in it and my younger son enjoys art.

  • Mallrats We Ain't

We used to malls. I grew up with them and took my boys to the malls when they were babies. Now that most malls have areas for kids to play, it was great when the weather was too hot or too cold to play outside.
The sensory things never bothered the boys, in fact Andy loves that the malls echo. But shopping with any kids is not very fun so I loved switching to online shopping. My boys have their preferred clothing types so Lands' End serves us well. And we get shoes online too.
But the boys love to go to Target and Publix (grocery store) and now Barnes & Noble because it is 2 story with elevator and escalators. And Apple store is a favorite with their kid computers. But stores with loud music are avoided even if we pass by one from the outside.

  • Down on the Farm

I tried to get Andy to help with some gardening. He did like wearing the gloves but said the blocks were "Too heavy!" And I did get Ryan to help with some wedding but he got bored rather quickly. Oh wait, they were just voicing what goes on in my head when I have to do heavy work and weed. ;)

  • Students on the Spectrum, Teachers on the Spectrum

One of my sons' teachers was not diagnosed on the spectrum but she had some serious characteristics. I think it really helped her understand and relate to them. I am the same way and I do understand the boys better.

Maybe an RV? There are plenty of RV parks down here in Florida. ;)

  • The Urge To Do It On His Own

My boys have been talking about getting their driver's license for a couple of years now. They are only 12 and 10. I can't imagine them with a DL. My 12 year old cannot focus long enough and my 10 year old thinks everything is a demolition derby. The thought of them planning a trip like that is amazing and scary at the same time.

  • Would You Have A Baby Like My Son?
Sharon commented on the article | almost 3 years ago

My sister once said that someone said to her that the reason we have these boys with autism is our punishment. (My husband was married when we got together and he quickly divorced his wife.) Others have said they are blessings and we have these boys because God chose us specially to be their parents. Who knows?
I do know you can never judge who will make good parents and how good or bad their offspring will be. Even GOOD genes can produce a psychopath
