  • Global Gag Rule To Be Reversed Today

Although I am happy to see the Mexico City Policy finally removed I have difficulties celebrating Wade vs Roe because of the ethical divide in abortion rights in the United States. The majority of the controversy, contrary to what media reports, stems from two unanswerable questions. At what point can an unborn child be consider an individual and be protected be law and civil rights? And can science prove, disprove, or define the human soul? It is these ethical divides that make justifying abortion as a Constitutional right questionable and the Supreme Court, by upholding Roe vs Wade, is enforcing a moral ethical standard which goes beyond the federal government's authority. This is why no anti abortion legislation should be allowed at the federal level of government and Roe vs Wade should be overturn. It is interesting to note, since everybody that celebrate Roe vs Wade fails to mention, the Norma McCorvey (aka Jane Roe) never received an abortion and is now a pro-rights activist.

  • What Can Obama Really Do?

In reference to the two earlier comments. The truth is there is very little he can do.Under all the overblown media coverage their are some disturbing underline truth to Obama's election that come to my mind. His policies on the economy as shown in his support for the bailouts will further in-debt the American people, he never addressed destructive effects of the war on drugs, he never fully addressed are foreign policy, and the disturbing reality that so many people in the United States proudly make racial distinctions shows just how divided our country really is. What the media is making out to be the "The First Black President" as a pop-culture icon I only see another man voted into what supposed to be a limited federal government position with a questionable background, campaign funding, and motives. Vote for change!

  • Animals in the Blogs: Killer Cosmetics, Vick's Dogs, Price of Poultry, and More

It is true animals are not the same thing as a cell phone or a car but legislation to change the status of domesticated animals is not the answer. First of all you have to consider the ethical argument of animal rights in a objective way. It is a moral standard that is extremely divided among the population and as much as many people love their pets such legislation will be widely seen as an infringement on individual liberties and property rights. In truth because domesticated animals are considered property such legislation can be used to violate property rights in general. As much as I despise dog fighting I can not help but realize that the legal action and legislation is the cause of the problem rather than the solution. The truth is Vick's dog is only a small portion of Pit Bull's that are treated in such horrific ways across the country despite the fact that dog fighting is a federal offense. Yet dog fighting continues, this is because the ethical divide throughout the United States as well as the economical opportunities gained through dog fighting. But since the activity is forced underground everything surrounding dog fighting is also underground to include the way fights are conducted, the training methods, and the treatment of the animals. Do to current laws the fights, training, and general treatment of the dogs are control by purely criminal elements that can easily use the currency gained from the fights to fund other criminal activities. Meanwhile the treatment of the animals are conducted without oversight to include the inhuman murder of dogs that are considered no longer useful. The reason the dogs where killed in such a barbaric fashion is because the owners did not have the knowledge or the drugs to humanly put out the dogs down and they cold not afford to take the dogs to proper facilities out of fear of arrest. I am not for the legalization for dog fighting but I understand the human benefits legalizing the practice. Dog fighters can operate in full oversight or government officials and the public, the fighting, training, and general treatment of the animals can be regulated, and the profits will be taken from criminals and can be taxed in order to better fund organizations that look for and treat mistreated animals. All of this is based on the principles of respect for individual rights and the fact that the government completely incapable of forcing ethical standards on the people.

  • Proposition K Is a Step Backward for Human Rights
Ano commented on the article | about 3 years ago

This article is full of assumptions and unsupported claims. The only reference that was used is a editorial and has Opinion posted in bold letters at the top. The heart of this article is the belief that decriminalizing prostitution is a violation of women's rights and will to an increase in social problems and other human rights violations such as human trafficking. Of course the writer uses an array of false logic and rhetoric support the argument. Contrary to the writer's argument it has been proven time after time again that the human rights problems and social problems from prostitution are a result of it's illegality. Legitimizing the industry allows it to be regulated and taxed. The taxes drawn from legal prostitution can be used to fund social programs such as FOPP. Meanwhile underworld criminal groups will lose a source of income or become legitimate business operating in visual sight of law enforcement and subject to government regulation. Furthermore isn't it a violation of a woman's or man's right to deny them the choice to use their body as a source of income.
