I am a Christian and I know that there are as many different versions of Islam as there are of Christianity. Fearing and harassing people just for being Muslim is ignorant.
I love the National Parks. My family has camped and hiked in many of them, including Zion (which banned plastic water bottles) and Grand Canyon (which has not). Please, NPS, ban the bottles and reduce the trash and waste in ALL our national parks!
I can speak personally to the value of AmeriCorps. My son, Mark, is a multi-talented young man, a musician who dropped out of college. A few years ago, a friend referred him to AmeriCorps, and he was accepted. During his first year, he worked in the forests, cleaning up after ice storms and floods; he loved it. During his second year, he assisted a first-year music teacher in one of our city's tougher middle schools; he loved that, too.
Wherever my husband and I have traveled since our retirement, we've met AmeriCorps volunteers -- from the Indian lands of the southwest to Appalachia. It's a great program that is a "win-win," helping struggling communities as well as young volunteers.
As a retired faculty member at a state university, I spent many hours advising nontraditional students. I know that online courses and programs can be a legitimate and useful way for them to complete their degrees. But the performance of Kaplan -- the huge drain of taxpayer-supported loans and the tiny percentage of students who graduate -- shows that change is needed. For-profit colleges should not be eligible to lend tuition to students without close monitoring by independent reviewers for quality and integrity.
